We’re just 62 days away from the San Jose Sharks kicking off their season against the Vegas Golden Knights at SAP Center.
The number 62 has only been worn three times in franchise history. The first player to wear it was Andrei Nazarov in 1997-98. The second, and most well-known, was Kevin Labanc, who wore it from 2016 to 2024. The most recent was California native Devin Cooley in 2024.
Starting with longtime journeyman Nazarov, who spent five years with the organization after being drafted by the Sharks in the 1992 NHL Draft. During that time, he played in 169 games and scored 23 goals and 28 assists for 51 points. After his time in San Jose, he went on to play for the Calgary Flames, Boston Bruins, Tampa Bay Lightning, Anaheim Mighty Ducks, Phoenix Coyotes, and Minnesota Wild.
Next is Labanc, also a Sharks draft pick from the 2014 NHL Draft. He spent eight seasons with the team, appearing in 478 games. In that span, he scored 82 goals and added 153 assists for 235 points. Last season, he left the organization and joined the Columbus Blue Jackets. So far this offseason, he has yet to sign with another NHL team.
Lastly, there’s Cooley, who had a great story even though his time with the team was short. He appeared in just six games, earning two wins and collecting three assists with a .870 save percentage and a 4.98 goals-against average. He hasn’t made it back to the NHL yet but has continued playing in the AHL.
