The San Jose Sharks have officially signed Kiefer Sherwood to a five-year contract extension.
According to Frank Seravalli, the 30-year-old winger’s new deal will carry a cap hit of $5.75 million and will also feature trade protection for the first four years, but it’s unknown at this time whether it’s a full no-trade/no-move clause or a modified one.
The Sharks forward has scored 18 goals this season and is on pace to shatter his previous career high, which was 19 last season.
Sherwood has struggled a bit offensively since the Sharks acquired him for two second round draft picks and defenseman Cole Clayton back in January, however he took a major step forward in that regard with a stellar performance against the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday.
It had been reported that the Sharks were open to flipping Sherwood ahead of Friday’s Trade Deadline if he hadn’t signed an extension with the organization, but progress was made early on Wednesday morning and a deal quickly came together.
Sherwood will be 36 years old when the contract expires.
Sherwood’s career has taken a very unique path to success, and now he’s been rewarded for what he brings to the table at the NHL level.
