The San Jose Sharks are signing Hockey Diversity Alliance co-founder Akim Aliu to an AHL tryout deal for the remainder of the season.
The Chicago Blackhawks drafted the 34-year-old in the 2nd round of the 2007 NHL Draft.
Aliu has seven NHL games, all for the Calgary Flames. He has two goals and one assist. He has not played professionally since the 2019-20 season, when he played for HC Litvínov in Czechia. He played six games and had one goal and two assists.
Aliu is well known for his off-ice work regarding racism in hockey. Along with former Shark Evander Kane, they created the Hockey Diversity Alliance.
Former Sharks winger Anthony Duclair has been a member of the alliance for a long time.
"We wanted to give him an opportunity to see what he can do," Grier said to Frank Seravalli.
