The San Jose Sharks are officially committed to the city of San Jose and the SAP Center for the foreseeable future.

On Tuesday, the San Jose City Council voted to approve the measure that would extend the Sharks’ lease in their home arena. The vote set a plan in place for renovations that will keep the SAP Center up to date for the next quarter of a decade.

According to NHL.com, the City of San Jose and Sharks Sports & Entertainment will jointly commit more than half a billion dollars into the aging arena.

Ahead of the vote, some conceptual renderings were released, which show what could potentially be in store for the SAP Center over the coming years.

The Sharks first moved to the SAP Center, which was originally known simply as San Jose Arena, for their third season after spending their first two campaigns in the famous Cow Palace in Daly City.

Since being opened in 1993, the Arena has essentially remained the same, with no major renovations taking place in over 30 years, although there have been minor changes over the years.

This offseason, the Sharks proceeded with a few minor renovations once again, as team president Jonathan Becher shared on social media earlier this month.

With the news of this lease extension, there is no doubt that hockey will remain in the Bay Area for the long-term future.
