The New York Rangers have placed Nick Bonino on waivers, just two days after playing against his former team, the San Jose Sharks.
In 45 games for the Rangers this season, Bonino has one goal and four assists. He has been playing in a bottom-six role and helped his team become one of the top faceoff teams in the league.
Rangers head coach Peter Laviolette spoke to members of the Rangers media about what transpired this morning. Bonino was not present at practice due to being waived.
Bonino has played 15 seasons in the NHL. He was drafted by the Sharks in the 6th round in 2007 but didn't debut in Teal until the 2021-22 season.
Bonino has taken on a new role the later he's gone in his career. He has been a journeyman throughout his time in the NHL and has seen just about everything. Laviolette coached him before this season while he played for the Nashville Predators.
Bonino won two Stanley Cups with the Pittsburgh Penguins, including in 2016 against the San Jose Sharks.
If he clears waivers, the Rangers will likely send Bonino to their AHL team. Reports suggest that the Rangers will respect if Bonino wants to terminate his contract and find another NHL home.
Bonino is a true NHL veteran, but his time in the league could end soon.
