Neville E. Guard-USA TODAY Sports - Former Sharks' Goaltending Prospect Joins Flyers On PTO

Former San Jose Sharks goalie prospect Eetu Makiniemi has joined the Philadelphia Flyers on a professional tryout.

Makiniemi was part of the Sharks organization for two seasons starting in 2022. He was part of the trade return that sent Brent Burns to the Carolina Hurricanes, one of Mike Grier's first most significant moves after he took over as GM.

The Finish netminder played two NHL games for San Jose in 2022-23 and went 1-0-1. He had 16 wins for the San Jose Barracuda and had a .900 save % both seasons.

Makiniemi dealt with injuries during his time with the Sharks, which derailed his promising 22-23 season. A hip injury left him out of the second half of the year, but he was able to return in the following season. The injuries didn't stop there, as Makiniemi only played 18 games in the AHL last season.

The Flyers could have some goaltending depth issues due to the rumors surrounding 22-year-old goalie prospect Alexi Kolosov. Kolosov joined the Flyers AHL affiliate from the KHL towards the end of last season, and now there is speculation that he doesn't want to play there due to what was initially planned for his NHL timeline.

Surprisingly, Ivan Fedotov came from Russia just before Kolosov. Then, he signed a two-year extension, seemingly blocking Kolosov's initial path to the NHL with starting goalie Samuel Ersson.

The Flyers are likely covering their depth at the goalie position in case Kolosov's situation goes south. Philadelphia expects Kolosov to participate in training camp.
