San Jose Sharks legend Patrick Marleau’s son, Landon Marleau, joined the team at their development camp this past week.
Landon, 18, plays for the Powell River Kings in the BCHL and will be entering his second season with the organization. He received an invitation to the Sharks’ development camp, where his dad, Patrick, now works as a player development coach.
It was a full-circle moment for the Marleau family. Patrick spent 21 seasons with the Sharks and still holds the franchise records in goals (522), points (1,111), and games played (1,607). His son was born and raised in Los Gatos, California and now had the chance to wear the Sharks jersey, even just for development camp.
Landon will return to the BCHL this season, but it wouldn’t be surprising if he eventually earned a contract from the Sharks down the road. It would be a surreal moment for the younger Marleau, who told Max Miller of NHL.com just how much he valued the experience.
“I’ve just got to be a sponge,” Landon said. “Take everything and just put it into my own arsenal. Everything that they give me. I just have to store it in my brain and think about it later when I'm doing drills.”
Patrick also spoke with Miller and gave his thoughts on watching his son on the ice.
“[Landon’s] got some good speed and really good hands,” Patrick said. “I think his hockey IQ is there as well. For him, I think it's just getting reps and playing games and getting in different situations, maturing physically and mentally. It's fun to see him push himself trying to get better.”
What a moment for the Marleau family. Hopefully we get to see another Marleau in a Sharks jersey someday soon.
