Mikael Granlund skated on Will Smith’s wing at San Jose Sharks practice.
The Sharks two stud rookies, Will Smith and Macklin Celebrini, will man the top two spots for years to come. In the short term, head coach Ryan Warsofsky slid last season’s No. 1 center to the wing as a way to get Smith in his natural position.
Granlund had good chemistry with Fabian Zetterlund and William Eklund so it would be a little surprising to break up that line, at least to start.
Smith and Celebrini’s development is critical to the future success of the Sharks.
Celebrini and Tyler Toffoli look locked in as a pair on one of the Sharks’ top two forward lines.
Granlund does have experience on the wing in his NHL career, but like Smith, his natural position is center.
The Sharks have options at forward this season, but from the most recent practice lines, Granlund on the wing seems like a real possibility.
