Artemi Panarin scored a hat trick in the New York Rangers 6-5 win over the San Jose Sharks.

Artemi Panarin scored a hat trick in the New York Rangers 6-5 win over the San Jose Sharks on Sunday night.

Five combined goals in the first period finished 3-2 in favor of the Rangers.

Panarin's hat trick brought his goal total to 15. Mika Zibanejad, Will Cuylle, and K'Andre Miller also scored for the Rangers. Jonathan Quick got the start and stopped 23 shots.

"Just the way we stuck with it throughout the 60 minutes," Sharks coach David Quinn said postgame. "It says an awful lot about a group. It's frustrating because we felt like we gave him a few gifts in the third period. Our mental toughness and our results make you feel good."

Anthony Duclair and Jacob MacDonald each scored for the second straight game. Ryan Carpenter scored his first goal of the season. Fabian Zetterlund scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season. Alexander Barabanov scored his first goal as well. Mackenzie Blackwood got the start and made 35 saves.

"It builds confidence for sure," Zetterlund said about his goal. "We were on the ice when they scored, I don't know, maybe three goals or something. We're gonna keep working on that."

Ty Emberson and Nico Sturm were late scratches for the Sharks as the team announced they would miss the game with lower-body injuries.

[We found out] right after pregame skate," Quinn said. "No clear idea what the timeline is."

Barabanov and Jan Rutta returned to the Sharks lineup tonight.
