For the Sharks, this move is all about cap space. They’re taking on Ellis’ contract, which carries a $6.25 million cap hit for the next two seasons, to gain some financial flexibility. Ellis’ career is essentially over due to an injury that’s kept him out for years, but his contract gives San Jose some more breathing room on the salary cap. It’s a move similar to the Carey Price trade earlier this year. It also gives them an extra draft pick in 2026, which is always a bonus.
As for the Flyers, they’re adding a solid bottom-six forward in Grundstrom. At 27, he was originally drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs before being traded to the Los Angeles Kings. He eventually found his way to San Jose and now lands in Philadelphia. In 292 career games, he’s scored 43 goals and 33 assists for 76 points and plays a physical, straightforward game that fits the Flyers’ style.
With Guryev, they’re picking up a 22-year-old defenseman who’s more of a depth piece at this point. He’s played 31 AHL games with four points and has spent most of the last two seasons in the ECHL. He may never be more than a depth option, but he gives the Flyers some extra insurance on the blue line
