The San Jose Sharks opened their three-day development camp with a July Fourth skate at Sharks Ice.
First-round picks Will Smith and Quentin Musty are at development camp to showcase why they were drafted early.
Smith instantly showcased why he was the No. 4 pick in this year's draft. He showcased his speed and skill in many of the drills. Smith is with Team Teal and will play for them during the Prospect Scrimmage on Thursday.
Smith displayed a very patriotic pair of skates.
"[The skates are] for all [of] development camp. I used those in worlds in Switzerland, so I haven't switched out of them yet," Smith said.
As for his first day on the ice: "It feels good. I mean, just to put the Sharks' jersey on and get the teal, it's pretty cool, and just to get to know the staff and everything like that."
Smith will be headed to Boston College next season and says he has a lot he wants to work on.
"I think just all around. Just strengthen all the way around. Putting on some muscle and getting more power in your skating is obviously something I'm always working on," Smith said.
The San Jose Sharks No. 26 pick in the 2023 NHL Draft showed some high offensive skills.
His size and speed were apparent when he stepped on the ice with Team White.
Musty can bring some life to the Sharks' offense while being competitive in the corners.
Musty's shot was on full display during this two-on-0 drill. He feels he can bring his size and skill to San Jose. His work ethic is also something he prides himself on.
"You just show up and practice your work ethic and some skills, but I think the game is what really matters. [I'm] just waiting there to just kind of show off who I am with my playmaking and work ethic," Musty told the media.
The Prospect Scrimmage on Thursday will be a place for all players to show off what they do best in a game setting.
The Sharks have needed a game-breaker-type player for quite some time, and Musty could be the guy to bring that energy.
Patrick Marleau has been on the ice with the forwards working in his new development coach role for the Sharks.
"[Marleau's] been great to me so far. Just seeing him still buzz around, that's kind of crazy," Musty said about the new coach. "Everyone's been great to me so far. It's nice. [I'm] still trying to get to know names and meeting new people, but yeah, so far, it's been great."
The San Jose Sharks development camp will run for two more days with more features from players like 2022 first-round pick Filip Bystedt. It will be interesting to see each prospect's playstyle during the Thursday night scrimmage.
