The San Jose Sharks have re-signed defenseman Jack Thompson to a one-year, two-way deal that will take him to restricted free agency once again next summer.
The former Sudbury Wolves captain’s new contract carries a cap hit of $800,000 at the NHL level and a salary of $115,000 at the American Hockey League level, per PuckPedia.
The 23-year-old defenseman is a former third-round pick who the Sharks acquired as part of the trade that sent Anthony Duclair to the Tampa Bay Lightning in March 2024.
Since joining the Sharks organization, Thompson has split time between the NHL and the AHL, spending the majority of his time with the San Jose Barracuda.
In 33 NHL games with the Sharks, the Courtice, Ontario native has 10 points, including four goals. Meanwhile he’s also played 43 games with the Barracuda, posting a total of four goals and 23 points.
Thompson is currently projected to start the 2025-26 season with the Barracuda, however with how valuable right-handed defensemen are in the NHL, a strong performance at training camp could catapult him into the Sharks’ opening night roster. If he’s able to do so, he’s put himself in prime position to negotiate a bigger contract next summer.
