The San Jose Sharks have announced that they’ve signed former New York Islanders forward Oliver Wahlstrom to a professional tryout (PTO) and an AHL contract.
That’s right, not only does he get a PTO with the Sharks which gives him a chance to earn an NHL job, but he also has an AHL deal in place with the San Jose Barracuda. If he doesn’t land a new NHL contract, he will at least have a place to play this season.
Wahlstrom, 25, began his career with the Islanders before being placed on waivers and claimed by the Boston Bruins in December of 2024. However, Boston chose not to extend him a qualifying offer, which made him an unrestricted free agent.
His NHL career has not gone as planned to this point. In 236 games, he has recorded 73 points. For a former first-round pick who was selected 11th overall in 2018, that production has not been enough. If Wahlstrom makes the Sharks out of camp, he could use the opportunity as a reset with the chance to play a bigger role and prove he still belongs.
Last season was especially difficult. He suited up for 43 games and finished with just three goals and three assists for six points. After six years in the league, he needs to find another level or he risks being pushed out of the NHL entirely. That is what makes this PTO and AHL contract so important. It feels like a crossroads moment in his career.
