The San Jose Sharks were back in action on Sunday afternoon for the second half of their weekend back-to-back. This time, they were in Canada’s capital to take on the Ottawa Senators.
Less than two minutes into the game, the Sharks got their first power play of the night when Tim Stutzle was called for high-sticking on Michael Misa. Ultimately, the Sharks were unable to score on the man advantage.
The Sharks got out to an early lead, when Adam Gaudette had a strong zone entry. A few passes later and the puck made its way to Mario Ferraro who scored his sixth goal of the season, a new career high for the defenseman.
The Senators got their first power play opportunity shortly after though, when John Klingberg was called for interference.
The Senators tied it up on the man advantage when Ferraro accidentally deflected the puck into his own net. The goal was officially credited to Batherson.
Tyler Toffoli scored his 18th of the season, deflecting a Ferraro slapshot past Linus Ullmark to restore the Sharks’ lead. With 41 seconds remaining in the opening frame, Vincent Desharnais was called for cross-checking Claude Giroux.
The Sharks then carried that 2-1 lead into the first intermission.
Four and a half minutes into the second period, the Sharks’ lead was once again erased as Warren Foegele scored his ninth goal of the season. That wouldn't be the case for long, though, as the Sharks answered back. Collin Graf scored his 19th of the season following a centering pass by Macklin Celebrini to make it a 3-2 hockey game.
With just over eight minutes remaining in the period, Dmitry Orlov was penalized for hooking former Sharks forward Fabian Zetterlund, giving the home team their third power play of the afternoon. With 6:20 left in the second, Zetterlund scored on a one-timer to tie the game at 3-3.
A minute later, Collin Graf turned over the puck in the defensive zone which immediately resulted in Ottawa taking the lead. Tyler Kleven netted his third of the campaign, giving the Senators a 4-3 lead late in the second period.
The Sharks got a key opportunity to tie the game with just over a minute remaining in the period, as Artem Zub was penalized for roughing. Tim Stutzle nearly extended the Senators’ lead while shorthanded, but Brossoit made the save and the period came to an end with the Senators leading 4-3.
The Senators quickly killed off the remainder of the power play to start the third period. Just 3:28 into the final frame Michael Misa kept his hot streak going as he fired a shot from around the hash marks that beat Ullmark on his glove side. Once again, we had a tied hockey game.
Ottawa retook the lead with just under seven minutes remaining when a Zub slapshot deflected off of Batherson and into the net, making it 5-4.
Dylan Cozens then added Ottawa’s sixth goal of the night, extending the lead to 6-4. Brady Tkachuk would close things out with an empty net goal. Celebrini was visibly frustrated after the goal, slamming his stick on the goal post. Ultimately, the Senators would hang on to win 7-4.
Despite taking the lead on three separate occasions, the Sharks were unable to close out the game and pick up the victory in Ottawa. Now they’ll travel to Alberta to take on the Edmonton Oilers in a matchup with major playoff implications in the Pacific Division.
