San Jose Sharks head coach David Quinn has his eye on a few players during the start of training camp.
Players like Jacob Peterson, Alexander Barabanov, and Mikael Granlund are all trying to find their role within the lineup.
Peterson had a great end of last season, but with the new additions, his spot may not be as secure as it seemed.
"He's sneaky good. He's got a real good hockey sense," Quinn said. "He can make a play. There is a lot to like about him as a player. We've got a lot of competition for our forward positions. He's certainly a guy that I would feel very comfortable with being on this team."
Barabanov will be a UFA at the end of this season, and although the forward says he wants to focus on the season at hand, he would be happy to sign a long-term deal in San Jose.
"I don't think too much about this. I just try to work hard and do my job," Barabanov said. "If you think too much, it doesn't help you. I want to stay here. My two babies were born here, and I like the group here, but it's a business."
After a tough season that finished as being a pivotal blame in the Pittsburgh Penguins' lack of success, Granlund has seemed to find a renewed sense of life.
"A guy that does an awful lot. I've coached against him, and I really thought he was a real good player from the opposing bench," Quinn said about Granlund. "But this guy brings it every shift. He brings it every drill and practice. He's got really good skills and smarts. People who know him speak very highly. So we're very happy to have him."
Training camp will continue tomorrow, with the San Jose Sharks just one day from their first preseason game.
