Toronto Maple Leafs goalie Martin Jones was named the NHL's Second Star of the Week just days after beating his former team, the San Jose Sharks.
Jones had a 3-0-0 record with a 0.66 GAA, .976 save %, and one shutout. He helped the Maple Leafs sweep their yearly three-game trip to California. Jones stopped 81 of 83 shots across the three games.
His shutout game against the team that gave him his NHL debut, the Los Angeles Kings.
This was his second shutout in seven starts with the Maple Leafs. Per the NHL, only seven goaltenders in Maple Leafs history had previously recorded two shutouts in their first seven starts in the Blue and White, the most recent being Jean-Sebastien Giguere in 2009-10.
Jones stopped 23 shots against the Sharks on Saturday and could face them again tomorrow. San Jose is traveling to Toronto and will face the Maple Leafs for the second straight game.
Jones is currently playing as the Maple Leafs No. 1 netminder. Joseph Woll is injured and likely won't return for at least a month. Jones even started on back-to-back nights, a rarity in this era of NHL goaltending.
The Maple Leafs could be in the market for some depth at goaltender, but with William Nylander getting paid today, they can't have anything beyond this year. Jones is the guy for Toronto for the foreseeable future.
The San Jose Sharks visit the Toronto Maple Leafs at 4 p.m. PST tomorrow in the first game of a five-game road trip.
