Neville E. Guard-USA TODAY Sports - REPORT: Penguins Have Interest in Kahkonen

The San Jose Sharks have been slowly building their goaltending pool, and Kaapo Kahkonen is still a part of that, for now.

According to Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli, the Pittsburgh Penguins have shown interest in the Sharks' goalie.

"It's believed San Jose is a potential landing spot for Petry, while the Pens are also among the teams believed to be interested in Kaapo Kahkonen," Seravalli writes.

Jeff Petry is under contract with the Pens for two more seasons with a $6.25 million cap hit.

Kahkonen has one year left at a $2.75 million cap hit.

San Jose Sharks GM Mike Grier said the team has "high hopes" for goaltender Eetu Makiniemi. Makiniemi had two appearances in the NHL this past season and was successful in both.

It is not a guarantee that he will be on the big club's roster next season, but if the team moves on from Kahkonen, that makes that much more likely.

With the Sharks actively shopping Erik Karlsson, they will need some replacement on the backend. Petry had 31 points in 61 games for the Pens last season. At 35 years old, he would also bring veteran leadership to the changing Sharks locker room.

A player like Henry Thrun could benefit from Jeff Petry taking him under his wing.

The San Jose Sharks are also in a position where they can take on some bad contracts. Creating more opportunities for younger players is needed as they are rebuilding, but tossing them into the fire without any leadership won't end well.

The NHL Draft is tonight, and trades could be on the table for all 32 teams. The Sharks hold picks No. 4 and No. 26.
