According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, San Jose Sharks No. 1 defenseman Mario Ferraro's name has floated in trade rumors.
Friedman said that the Sharks are considering all options regarding trading players. He continues to say:
"I don't believe that will be inexpensive," Friedman said about Ferraro's price. "I just also want to say I don't think he's off the table at this time."
Ferraro is 25 and one of the NHL's top defensive-minded defensemen. He is currently third in the NHL in blocked shots with 77. He had nine blocked shots on Friday against the New Jersey Devils.
Ferraro is in the second year of a four-year deal with a cap hit of $3.25 million. He doesn't have any trade clauses on his contract.
Friedman says that Ferraro is a "Heck of a young player."
The Sharks alternate captain has become a force on the backend this season. The Sharks' front office knew he would become a solid NHL player while he was partnered with Brent Burns.
He and Ty Emberson have been among the top ten best defense pairs in the entire NHL.
The Sharks need more prospects, but trading away a 25-year-old defenseman who is a leader on and off the ice doesn't seem right.
As Friedman said, any team that wants to acquire Ferraro will have to pay a hefty price, and even then, the Sharks may not accept a deal.
The NHL trade deadline is scheduled for March 8, and it is safe to say that there will be plenty of rumors swirling around the San Jose Sharks.
