Dean Tait - Hockey Shots - Zetterlund Scores First Goal in Teal; Hurricanes Beat Sharks 6-3

The Carolina Hurricanes beat the San Jose Sharks 6-3 in a penalty-filled game on Tuesday night.

Seth Jarvis, Jaccob Slavin, Martin Necas, Jesperi Kotkaniemi, and Stefan Noesen scored for the Hurricanes. Antti Raanta made 12 saves after he entered the game for Frederik Andersen.

Sebastian Aho was ruled out before the game due to an upper-body injury. Goaltender Frederik Andersen got hit in the mask with the puck and left the game in the first period.

Mackenzie Blackwood was terrific again for San Jose. He made 35 saves, which broke a Sharks record for most saves in a goalie's first two games. Fabian Zetterlund scored his first goal with Team Teal. William Eklund and Filip Zadina also scored for San Jose.

San Jose Sharks head coach David Quinn liked the first five minutes of the third period.

"The first five minutes were the best part," Quinn said. "Then the penalties started. I didn't like the way we played for most of the night. I don't think we skated the way we have been. I don't think we were physical enough, and it ended up catching up to us."

There were 13 penalties called in the game. The Hurricanes scored three powerplay goals and one shorthanded goal. The Sharks scored two powerplay goals of their own.

"When you don't skate and hit, you're gonna get penalties," Quinn said. "That's what happened. Just bad penalties. Lazy, lazy penalties."

Quinn was not happy with the effort given by the Sharks tonight, either.

"Soft on battles. Way to puck-conscious, so that was disappointing because that hasn't been the case [this season]," Quinn said.

    FIRST PERIOD:

3:15: Tomas Hertl springs Fabian Zetterlund on a breakaway. Zetterlund took a quick snapshot and beat Andersen over the blocker. 1-0 Sharks.

"When you score after 26 games, of course, it's a nice feeling," Zetterlund said. It was a good pass by Tommy [Hertl]."

4:05: Seth Jarvis can find a loose puck in front and touch it past Blackwood, 1-1.

Yet again, the Sharks got hemmed in their zone. The Hurricanes outshot the Sharks 18-5 at the end of the first. Hurricanes goalie Fredrik Andersen left the game in the period.

During the intermission, the Canes announced that Andersen wouldn't return for precautionary reasons.

    SECOND PERIOD:

8:54: Mike Hoffman tried to make a full ice entry pass that Slavin picked off. Slavin was stopped initially, then dragged the puck around Blackwood for the goal. 2-1 Canes.

9:11: Zadina spins around and fires a shot past Raanta to tie the game at two.

16:06: Henry Thrun fired a puck wide, but the rebound went right back in front for Eklund to tap in. The Hurricanes challenged for goalie interference but lost. 3-2 Sharks.

The period ends with more penalties. Tony DeAngelo was assessed a two-minute minor for unsportsmanlike conduct. After the period ended, he received a ten-minute misconduct for the same thing.

For the hockey, however, the Sharks continue to get hemmed in their D-zone, but their offense has looked better. They are getting outshot 30-11 at the end of two.

    THIRD PERIOD:

9:08: Former San Jose Shark Stefan Noesen stuffs one past Blackwood to tie the game on the powerplay. 3-3

11:51: Jarvis fires home a one-timer from the slot for his second powerplay goal of the game.

    14:51: Martin Necas scores a beautiful wrap-around goal. 5-3

15:08: Kotkaniemi iced the game with a shot from the high slot. 6-3.

"It's a pretty brutal feeling—back-to-back games against three really good teams. Despite maybe not [getting] the shots and chances, we're right there," Mario Ferraro said. "So, we let this one slip. It stings, but it's early in the season. There are things that we can learn from this [as a] group."

The Sharks just didn't have enough talent to defend against a high-powered Hurricanes team.
