Three days from now, it will have been one year since the San Jose Sharks traded Timo Meier to the New Jersey Devils and acquired Fabian Zetterlund, Shakir Mukhamadullin, and more.
Zetterlund's start to his Sharks career was not very good. He failed to score a goal and had just three assists in 22 games after the trade.
That has since changed this season. He has been a staple in the top-six forwards and is tied for the team lead in goals with 15. While his role on the team is higher than it would be if he were on a contending team, he has fit the Sharks' needs well and is having a career season.
"It's been fun," Zetterlund said about his season. "[I've gained] a lot of experience. A lot of ice time. [I have] confidence out there. It's been a fun run."
Zetterlund has shown a unique ability to play in all situations. He had never killed penalties before and is playing on the flank on the top powerplay. He uses his speed and shoots off the rush exceptionally well, too.
"He's playing with such confidence," Sharks head coach David Quinn said. "Last year, he was feeling his way through things, and you could tell there was a lot going on. I just think he came here feeling more comfortable and being in a better spot mentally [and] in a better spot personally. He's taken advantage of a great opportunity."
Quinn hasn't hesitated to put him on the ice at any moment. He is averaging 18:36 TOI compared to his 13:52 with San Jose last season.
As for how he's feeling about this season's trade deadline, Zetterlund said he tries not to focus on it but wants to stay in San Jose long-term.
"I'm here right now, and I want to stay here," He said. "I haven't seen anything, and I don't really look at my own name. I live here right now, and I want to stay here and play hockey here."
Zetterlund's contract has one more year on it before he becomes an RFA. If he can continue to improve his game into next season, he will likely be rewarded with a contract extension.
"I really enjoy it here and everything around. It's perfect," Zetterlund said. "I see a bright future in this organization, and I want to be a part of it."
Zetterlund said he wants to see the team continue to build chemistry every day and into the future. He has been a bright spot for the Sharks in a tough season.
