During his mid-season media availability, San Jose Sharks GM Mike Grier shut down any indication that Logan Couture would lose his captaincy.

Before meeting with the media, Grier participated in a town hall meeting for Sharks 365 members, including team President Jonathan Becher and head coach Ryan Warsofsky. The panel was asked about Logan Couture's status, but Grier didn't divulge much.

What stuck out is Grier told fans that the team is "worrying about Logan, the person, rather than Logan, the hockey player."

Couture hasn't played a game since Jan. 31, 2024, the sixth and final game of the 23-24 season. He hasn't been able to jump on the ice in any capacity this season. What is known is that Couture is working with the Sharks' performance staff on his rehab.

During the media portion of Grier's availability, the GM went into more detail about how the team feels about their captain and if a change might be coming, especially with Macklin Celebrini showing leadership ability at such a young age.

"I mean, Couture is the captain. As long as he's here, he'll be the captain, and I'm not someone who's going to go out and feel like there's a need to name a new captain the next day," Grier said. "All that stuff is earned over time, and people lead in their own ways. I think we have a good group.

"Some of the young guys, like I said, Mack has his leadership by how hard he practices and plays every day. [Tyler] Toffili with his calm demeanor. [Cody Ceci] with his calm demeanor, and Mario [Ferraro]with his all-out compete," Grier said. "[Mikael Granlund] being Granny. Pulling guys aside and having conversations with them. And [Luke Kunin] putting it on the line every day. We have a lot of guys leading, even [Fabian Zetterlund] and [William Eklund]. They lead in their own way."

While Couture's career isn't officially over, there are no signs of any potential return, at least not now. The words the San Jose Sharks GM spoke tonight are not promising for the captain's return, especially when day-to-day life is at the forefront of recovery.
