In a bit of a surprise move, the Nashville Predators have placed 2017 first-round pick defenseman Dante Fabbro on waivers.

Fabbro was the 17th overall pick in 2017 and has been a solid player for the Predators since he broke into the NHL in a full-time role in 2018.

During the 2021-22 season, Fabbro put up a career-high 21 points in 63 games while averaging 19:03 of ice time.

The 26-year-old right-handed d-man has played just six games this season and has yet to record a point. He is -3 and is averaging just 13:06 of ice time.

The San Jose Sharks are the second-highest waiver priority team in the NHL, only ahead of the Predators. Nashville had Stanley Cup aspirations after its big-name offseason additions of Steven Stamkos and Jonathan Marchessault, but it has started the season with a 4-9-1 record and is in last place behind the Sharks.

The Sharks' defense has been okay, but Mario Ferraro and Jan Rutta have struggled significantly. Right-handed defensemen also hold a little extra value in the NHL.

With the Sharks recently adding Timothy Liljegren from the Toronto Maple Leafs, it doesn't make sense for San Jose to claim Fabbro. Shakir Mukhamadullin is waiting in the AHL and can provide a similar play to Fabbro, if not have a little more offensive upside. Mukhamadullin is left-handed, however.

On paper, adding another blue liner with Mukhamadullin waiting in the wings doesn't make sense, especially one that will be a UFA after the season. Fabbro currently has a cap hit of $2.5 million.
