As Brad Elliott Schlossman reported, Arizona State has placed coach Greg Powers on administrative leave at the players' request.

As the hockey world awaits positive news about Matthew Mayich, seven of his teammates have spoken out against their Arizona State coach, Greg Powers, leading to his administrative leave, according to Brad Elliott Schlossman of the Grand Folks Herald.

Mayich collapsed during an outdoor team workout on Aug. 20, just days after arriving in Arizona for the college hockey season. The 21-year-old has been hospitalized since.

Tim Zeisel, a non-ASU employee and former military service member, led the workout in temperatures just under 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Zeisel confirmed that ASU coaches, including Greg Powers, were present.

Since this has happened, we have heard from Mayich's lawyers, Mayich's family, and now, the players. The Athletic reported that, in a 26-page letter sent to ASU president Michael Crow on Monday, the players disputed numerous findings from the university’s initial review of the Aug. 20 workout, writing that Mayich did not receive water and was provided inadequate medical care after his collapse.

The players requested that Powers lose his job and asked for a former player with connections to the program as a potential interim head coach, specifically naming former Phoenix Coyotes star Shane Doan.

The players sent the letter anonymously through attorney Tim Casey because, they wrote, they fear retaliation from coach Greg Powers and his staff. The seven players — roughly a quarter of the roster — wrote that additional teammates share their views but did not join the letter because they have similar concerns about reprisal.

Powers has now been placed on administrative leave, and assistant coach Mike Corbett will coach the Sun Devils this weekend.

Mayich remains hospitalized.
