The St. Louis Blues are entering this off-season with a few pending unrestricted free agents. Defenseman Ryan Suter is among them after signing a one-year contract with the Blues this past off-season.
Suter, 40, proved to be a solid veteran defenseman for the Blues this season. In 82 regular-season games for St. Louis, he posted two goals, 15 points, 109 blocks, and a plus-7 rating. He also played in five post-season games, recording one assist and a minus-2 rating.
Now, with Suter's contract expired, the Blues must decide if they want to keep him around or let him leave through free agency. That is assuming he doesn't end up announcing his retirement, of course.
Suter has been transparent about wanting to re-sign with the Blues, so he could be worth keeping around at an affordable price. He did his job in a bottom-pairing role and was a nice mentor for the Blues' young players, so there is a case to be made about bringing him back.
However, it would also be understandable if the Blues wanted to find an upgrade for their bottom pairing this summer. A few pending unrestricted free agent blueliners who could be solid additions to the Blues' bottom pairing include Matt Grzelcyk, Dmitry Orlov, Brian Dumoulin, and Ryan Lindgren.
Nevertheless, it is going to be intriguing to see what happens with Suter this summer. Do you think the Blues should keep the 2003 seventh-overall pick around? Let your thoughts be known in the comments.
