The Blues made the right call bringing in this defenseman.
During the 2024 NHL off-season, the St. Louis Blues surprised hockey fans by signing both Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway to offer sheets. The Edmonton Oilers opted not to match them, leading to Broberg and Holloway officially becoming Blues.
Since then, Holloway has broken out as a top-six forward for the Blues. However, Broberg has also proven to be a great addition to the Blues' lineup.
After struggling to cement himself a permanent role on the Oilers' blueline, Broberg has found a home in St. Louis' top four. In addition, he also gets penalty-kill time on the Blues, so he is an important part of their blueline.
Broberg has also hit a new level offensively with the Blues this season. The 2019 eighth-overall pick has posted new career highs with four goals, 13 assists, and 17 points in 43 games. His previous career highs were one goal, seven assists, and eight points, which he recorded during the 2022-23 season.
Overall, the decision to sign Broberg to a two-year, $9.16 million ($4.58 million AAV) contract is looking like the right call by the Blues. While they had to give up their 2025 second-round pick as compensation for the offer sheet, Broberg's emergence as a key defender on their blueline has made it worth it.
