Pius Suter picked up a silver medal at the 2026 IIHF Men's World Championship as Switzerland fell to Finland 1-0 in the gold medal game.

Switzerland and Pius Suter once again fell short in their quest for a gold medal at the World Championship.

The host country, Switzerland, had come close to winning gold on several occasions in recent events. In fact, they have lost in the final and won silver in three consecutive years.

On Sunday, Suter and Switzerland put their perfect 9-0-0-0 record to the test against Finland, whom they had defeated in the preliminary round. Unfortunately for the Swiss, the issues that have plagued them in the big game previously came back to haunt them, as they failed to score in regulation and overtime, losing 1-0.

Buffalo Sabres prospect Konsta Helenius danced around the Swiss zone before rifling a shot past goaltender Leonardo Genoni.

This was Suter’s third time representing Switzerland at the World Championships, and the first time he has won a medal. Suter did not play on either of the two recent silver-medal-winning teams.

Suter finished the World Championship with one goal and four points in five games, playing just half of his team’s games. The 30-year-old now has five goals and 15 points in 21 career World Championship games.

In addition to Suter, Robert Thomas and Dylan Holloway fell short of winning a medal with Team Canada, and Oskar Sundqvist and Love Harenstam lost in the quarterfinals to Switzerland with Sweden.

The off-season now begins for these five players.
