Despite not tendering Jonatan Berggren a qualifying offer, the St. Louis Blues are reportedly expected to re-sign the 25-year-old winger to a one-year, $2 million contract.
On Monday, it came as a surprise that the St. Louis Blues did not tender winger Jonatan Berggren a qualifying offer.
But less than 24 hours later, clarity on the situation has been provided. According to multiple reports, the Blues and Berggren are expected to agree to a contract, likely for one year and $2 million.
ESPN’s Emily Kaplan was the first to report that the two parties will likely agree to a contract.
Berggren was a waiver wire pick by the Blues during the 2025-26 season, and he impressed in his limited action. In 36 games with the Blues, Berggren scored six goals and 16 points but provided two-way versatility lower in the Blues’ lineup.
Despite limited action, the 25-year-old won over many fans, and when the news broke that Berggren was not receiving a qualifying offer, many were disappointed. Now, those who were disappointed can feel a sense of relief.
Berggren will no doubt have competed hard for a roster spot in pre-season and training camp. With the additions the Blues have made and with a previous logjam of wingers, Berggren’s spot in the lineup isn’t guaranteed.
In all, healthy competition is a good thing for NHL teams. With the rising salary cap, Berggren is a relatively cheap option who plays reliably.
