Per NHL insider Darren Dreger, the St. Louis Blues are among the teams interested in acquiring Dylan Larkin who are not on his trade list.
Surprising NHL news emerged this morning, as Detroit Red Wings coach Todd McLennan announced that Dylan Larkin will not play tonight as the team faces the Chicago Blackhawks.
McLennan said interim GM Shawn Horcoff would address the situation and that the Red Wings would issue a statement. After the announcement, TSN hockey insider Pierre LeBrun said trade talks surrounding Larkin have escalated. While he noted a deal is not imminent, discussions have certainly escalated.
Recently, TSN's Darren Dreger revealed that the St. Louis Blues are among the teams interested in Larkin who aren't on his current 10-team trade list. Larkin's trade list includes the Minnesota Wild, Florida Panthers, Vegas Golden Knights, Dallas Stars, Washington Capitals, Carolina Hurricanes, Utah Mammoth, Tampa Bay Lightning, New Jersey Devils, and Colorado Avalanche.
Since the off-season, the Blues have been interested in adding young, skilled players such as Mason McTavish and Connor McMichael. They have also been linked to players like Simon Edvinsson and Alexander Nikishin. Larkin doesn't fit this category, as he is 30 years old, but Larkin would be a huge add to the roster.
Robert Thomas and Larkin would form a formidable one-two punch if the Blues make a deal.
The Red Wings released a statement today, suspending him from the team without pay.
“Dylan Larkin has informed us that he will no longer play for the Detroit Red Wings,” Horcoff said in a statement provided on X. “We are disappointed by his decision, particularly given his obligations to the organization and his teammates. We have therefore suspended Dylan without pay.
Larkin is in year four on an eight-year contract, carrying an $8.7 million AAV.
The Blues are at a disadvantage in pursuing Larkin, as they would need to convince him he can compete for a Stanley Cup in St. Louis.
