On Wednesday, the Bridgeport Islanders, the AHL affiliate of the New York Islanders announced they had signed 27-year-old defenseman Sean Day to an AHL deal.
Day had 110 points (20 goals, 90 assists) in 277 career AHL games with the Syracuse Crunch and Hartford Wolf Pack. In 2021–22, he set career highs with 8 goals, 32 assists, 40 points, and 69 games played for Syracuse, the same season he made his NHL debut with the Tampa Bay Lightning, appearing in two games.
In May, Lightning assistant general manager and director of hockey operations, Mathieu Darche was named general manager of the New York Islanders. Darche worked under GM Julien BriseBois for six seasons, winning back-to-back Stanley Cups with the Bolts in 2020 and 2021.
“We had Sean in Syracuse for two years, and he was an outstanding AHL defenseman,” Darche told The Sheet. “What's great is, I think he's comfortable with me because I was in Tampa with him.”
“I saw some workout videos of him, he’s really dedicated. He's excited. He's a good size, he's a strong guy.”
Day was originally drafted by the New York Rangers in the third round (No. 81) of the 2016 NHL Draft.
