The Maple Leafs could look to sign this Lightning defenseman if he hits the market.
At the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline, the Tampa Bay Lightning acquired Matt Dumba from the Arizona Coyotes. Overall, it was a sensible move, as the Lightning needed to improve their right side and defense in general.
However, with the Lightning entering the summer with limited cap space, Dumba could hit the free-agent market this offseason. The Lightning will prioritize re-signing Steven Stamkos, while Anthony Duclair could also be brought back.
If Dumba does, in fact, hit the market, one team that will likely target him is the Toronto Maple Leafs. They were heavily linked to him during both last offseason and nearing the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline.

The Maple Leafs are entering the summer with a clear need to improve the right side of their defense. As a result, adding a hard-nosed veteran who can play big minutes like Dumba certainly could interest them again.
If the Maple Leafs added Dumba, he would be a candidate for second-pairing minutes. However, even if he were on their bottom pairing, their defense would get a boost. He would also be an obvious fit on their penalty kill if signed.
If Dumba is not brought back by the Lightning, the Maple Leafs won’t be the only team in on him, as NHL clubs love gritty right-shot defensemen. It will be intriguing to see where he ends up this summer from here.
