This Lightning defenseman will likely hit the free-agent market this summer.

This Lightning defenseman will likely hit the free-agent market this summer.

The Tampa Bay Lightning made a significant splash earlier this week, acquiring old friend Ryan McDonagh from the Nashville Predators. With this move, the Lightning have significantly improved their top four for the 2024-25 season.

However, this move has also put the Lightning in a bit of a pickle regarding their cap space. After adding McDonagh, the Lightning now have a little over $5 million of cap space, and Steven Stamkos must be re-signed. As a result, it seems likely that UFA defenseman Matt Dumba won't be back.

Dumba, 29, was acquired by the Lightning at the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline from the Arizona Coyotes. The right-shot defenseman proved to be a decent rental for the Lightning, as he gave them more depth and experience. Along with that, his physicality and toughness made him impactful.

While Dumba had some solid moments with the Lightning, it is hard to envision a path where he will be brought back because of Tampa Bay's limited cap space. Along with that, they have already landed a big upgrade in McDonagh, which could make Dumba expendable.

If Dumba hits the market, he should have a good amount of interest. This is because he is a hard-hitting right-shot defenseman with a strong resume. From here, it will be interesting to see what happens with the 2012 first-round pick.
