The Tampa Bay Lightning have had an incredibly busy offseason. However, when taking a glance at their roster, it is fair to wonder if they could invite at least one player to training camp through a professional tryout (PTO) agreement.
While the Lightning have plenty of talent, it would not hurt for them to add to their depth. One specific area on their roster that could use a boost is the goaltender position. While they have an elite starter in Andrei Vasilevskiy, they could benefit by finding an upgrade at the backup position.
When looking at goalies still available for the taking in free agency, one who undoubtedly stands out is veteran netminder Martin Jones.
It is a bit surprising that Jones has yet to be signed at this point of the summer. The 34-year-old was a solid piece of the Toronto Maple Leafs' roster last season, posting an 11-8-1 record, a 2.87 goals-against average (GAA), and a .902 save percentage (SV%). With numbers like these, he could be a solid addition to the Lightning's roster as an experienced backup if signed.
Lightning backup Jonas Johansson had a .890 SV% and a 3.37 GAA in 26 contests last season. Overall, the 28-year-old had some solid moments but also struggled with consistency at times. Thus, inviting Jones to camp to give them another potential option could be a good move for the Bolts.
Nevertheless, with the Lightning having some lingering questions at the backup goaltender position, they should consider taking a flier on Jones with a PTO. If he earned a deal through a strong camp, he could work nicely as their backup or even as their third-stringer, just like he did in Toronto.
