Last month, the Tampa Bay Lightning re-assigned top prospect Conor Geekie to their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch. This was after the rookie had six goals and 12 points in his first 49 games this season with the Lightning. He also cooled off before being sent down, going nine games straight without a point.
Since joining the Crunch, Geekie currently has three goals and six points in his first 12 games. While these offensive numbers are not necessarily the highest, he has been starting to heat up with the AHL squad as of late.
On March 7 against the Utica Comets, Geekie scored his first goal in seven games. He then followed that up by scoring again against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on March 9. With this, he now has three points over his last four contests with the Crunch.
Seeing Geekie starting to find his scoring touch at the AHL level is certainly encouraging. Young forwards will naturally come across some rough patches as they continue to work on their development, but he is certainly heating up now.
It will be fascinating to see how Geekie builds on his hot streak from here. If he keeps producing offensively with the Crunch, it could very well open the door for him to receive another call-up to the Lightning's roster in the near future. We will need to wait and see what happens on that front.
