Brayden Point has led the Tampa Bay Lightning in goals in three consecutive seasons, but the race in the 2024-25 season was close, with Jake Guentzel inching just behind.

Point has scored 42, 46 and 51 goals in the past three seasons. Guentzel set a career high with 41 goals last year, finishing just one goal shy of Point's total.

Before Point took the goal-scoring reins, it was Steven Stamkos who had a hold on the Lightning's goal-scoring lead. No player in Lightning history has more goals and points than Stamkos, although Nikita Kucherov will likely pass Stamkos in points.

Point and Guentzel tally their goals differently than Stamkos did. The Lightning's long-time captain and first overall pick in the 2008 NHL Draft powered his goals past goaltenders. His one-timer is one of the best shots in the history of the NHL, and his wrist shot was just as lethal. When Stamkos stepped over the blueline, he became a threat to score.

Point and Guentzel attack goal-scoring in different fashions. The pair of forwards score most of their goals from the slot. Paired with Kucherov's innate passing ability and vision, Point and Guentzel are masters at finding open areas of the ice and finding those pockets virtually untouched.

When creating chances for themselves, Point and Guentzel do things differently. Point's speed is how he generates transition chances. The 29-year-old is in the upper echelon of skaters in the NHL and puts defenders on their back foot when he's attacking.

Guentzel isn't blessed with the speed Point possesses, but the 30-year-old is deceptive. He works give-and-gos to perfection and takes advantage of positioning and puck movement. Guentzel doesn't need to perfectly pick the top corner, but he understands that when a goaltender is sliding to his right or left, there's a split second where the five-hole might be open. His understanding of which areas the goalie might be susceptible to also allows him to score more goals, firing shots just above the pad but also below the glove and blocker.

Point and Guentzel are the two favorites to lead the team in goals, but they aren't the only candidates.

Kucherov has a career-high of 44 goals, and if he plays a bit more selfishly, he could very well score 50 goals. Brandon Hagel recorded 35 goals last season, notching a power play goal. If he can net a few power play goals, he, too, could be in the race.
