Toronto will head to Montreal this weekend to take on the Canadiens' prospects in a two-game showdown.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are making a captaincy change. The Hockey News breaks down why Auston Matthews will become the 26th captain in franchise history.

The Maple Leafs have named the prospects heading to Montreal for a Prospect Showdown this weekend.

Two of Toronto's top prospects Easton Cowan and Fraser Minten will be part of the squad heading to Montreal later this week. Defenseman Noah Chadwick, who took a massive step in the WHL last season, will also play.

Several other Maple Leafs draft selections, including Nikita Grebenkin, Roni Hirvonen, Ty Voit, Topi Niemela, Dennis Hildeby, Vyacheslav Peksa, and Artur Akhtyamov, all who'll likely begin the season in the AHL with the Toronto Marlies, are also a part of the rookie squad.

Four of the Maple Leafs' eight draft picks from earlier this summer will participate in the rookie camp: Ben Danford, Miroslav Holinka, Nathan Mayes, and Sam McCue. The roster also includes Jacob Quillan, Braeden Kressler, and Cade Webber, three players who were undrafted signees by Toronto.

Five players signed to AHL deals with the Marlies, including Robert Mastrosimone, Matthew Barbolini, Ryan McCleary, Chas Sharpe, and Sam Stevens, plus four free agents in Brandon Lisowsky (a Maple Leafs draft pick), Marshall Finnie, Maxim Muranov, and Rhett Parsons will also take part in the rookie camp.

Toronto Marlies head coach John Gruden, plus the rest of the Marlies coaching staff — assistants Michael Dyck and Steve Sullivan, goaltending coach Hannu Toivonen, and video coach Troy Paquette — will oversee the squad this week.

The Maple Leafs prospects will have three on-ice sessions, from Wednesday to Friday, before heading to Montreal for a two-game series against the Canadiens' prospects.
