The Toronto Maple Leafs have embraced their No. 1 overall pick from the 2026 draft by incorporating one of his goal celebrations from his time at Penn State

Gavin McKenna finally pulled back the curtain on the goal celebration that has quickly become a shared ritual among the Maple Leafs.

Following practice Friday ahead of Saturday’s game against the Edmonton Oilers, the 18-year-old first-overall pick explained the gesture that teammates including Easton Cowan and Auston Matthews have begun to flash. The motion, which has drawn curiosity from fans and media in recent days, traces back to McKenna’s college days.

“We did it in college, and then there’s like if someone did something cool or like they’re like a beauty, then you do that,” McKenna said. “And I started doing it here with the guys, and then yeah, it’s pretty cool to see it catch on.”

The celebration does not yet have an official name. McKenna said it was a team tradition during his year at Penn State last season, rather than something he invented himself. It first appeared with the Leafs in training camp after a nice goal, when he performed it.

When asked about the meaning behind the celebration one day before the reveal,  Easton Cowan declined to elaborate and instead pointed to McKenna, indicating it was his to explain if he chose. McKenna ultimately did so after Friday’s skate.

The gesture has already been spotted from multiple Leafs. Cowan used a similar motion after scoring, while Matthews and McKenna both acknowledged the Scotiabank Arena crowd with it following Thursday’s 5-4 win over the Rangers, in which Troy Stecher scored the late winner. McKenna noted it is simply something the group has picked up when a play stands out.

The Leafs prepare for a road trip that opens against Connor McDavid and the Oilers. For McKenna, who has already shown flashes of the offensive ability that made him the top pick in 2026, the celebration has become another small sign of how quickly he has been absorbed into the room.

The Leafs have won three consecutive games following a 5-4 win against the New York Rangers on Thursday. To say vibes are good around the team would be an understatement.
