Martin Jones will back up Joseph Woll Against the Carolina Hurricanes
RALEIGH — Martin Jones will back up goaltender Joseph Woll when the Toronto Maple Leafs visit the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday.
Jones, who backed up Ilya Samsonov on Saturday, was pressed into action late in the third period after the Russian goalie appeared to injure himself and was unable to finish the game.
Keefe said that Samsonov appeared to be "fine" despite how things looked. But the Maple Leafs coach was also asked if Samsonov was feeling better during his pre-game availability before his club took the Hurricanes.
"I wouldn't say he's necessarily feeling better, but I think it's pretty similar to how he was last night," Keefe said. "The most encouraging thing for us is it's nothing to do with anything that you would typically think of that would prevent a goalie from playing.
"That said, he's certainly not at 100%, but we're hopeful that after today and another day off tomorrow that he's in a better place and we'll see precisely where he's at."
This certainly didn't ring as optimistic as how Keefe made it seem following Toronto's 6-3 win against the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday.
Samsonov has been sharp over the last few months following a disastrous first half of the season that saw the goalie end up on waivers. With three goaltenders on the active roster, the Leafs have begun to dress Jones as a backup while giving Woll a full night off. Woll reportedly flew to Carolina on Saturday. Under traditional circumstances, Woll would have had to step in for Samsonov when the Russian got hurt.
Samsonov had another injury scare last week when he appeared to injure himself in the morning skate. But he shook it off and went on to make his scheduled start against the Carolina Hurricanes. The Russian is 5-1-1 in March with a .915 save percentage.
