How Rielly Met Rielly: Maple Leafs' Morgan Rielly Greets Fan Named After Him in Sweden, Poses for Photo and Gifts Autographed Stick
STOCKHOLM — Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly was holding court with the media following the team's practice in Stockholm, Sweden, on Saturday when he was about a young fan who was holding a special sign.
"I'm about to go over there after I'm done with you guys," he said in acknowledgement.
There was a small group of fans who were lucky enough to attend Leafs practice on Saturday. They were all guests of Mats Sundin and the player's son Julian. Members of Julian's hockey teams were invited to take in the session.
That's where the father of one of the fans, who is originally from New Brunswick, but lives in Sweden now, accompanied, Rielly, a young girl.
"I was named after you, Rielly," the sign read.
Rielly's moment with that special fan was one of many special moments from the Maple Leafs during their week-long trip to Sweden.
William Nylander, who was without a doubt, the most popular member of the Leafs on the trip, also made sure to stop by and sign autographs for the fans in attendance.
The Maple Leafs picked up the maximum four points available in their two games in Sweden and went home immediately after defeating the Minnesota Wild 4-3 in overtime on Sunday. Rielly was named player of the match and received a Rolex watch after scoring a goal and adding two assists. Nylander was named player of the match and received the same watch after he had the same output in a 3-2 win against the Detroit Red Wings on Friday.
