Out since Nov. 2 with a high-ankle sprain, the Maple Leafs hope Liljegren can bring a boost of energy to a group that has prioritized rest.
Timothy Liljegren will make his return to the Toronto Maple Leafs' lineup on Saturday when the club hosts the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday.
The defenseman was skating in TJ Brodie's spot on the top defense pair alongside Morgan Rielly during the club's morning skate. Brodie is the latest player to be hit by the flu bug that has spread around Toronto's locker room.
Brodie will be a game-time decision as the club elected to keep him away from the morning session. Regardless of how that decision shakes out, Liljegren will draw in.
Liljegren sustained a high-ankle sprain on Nov. 2 when he was tripped by Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand. Since then, the Swedish defenseman has had to be patient in the recovery process.
"It was kind of a slow injury to rehab," he explained. "You walk around in a boot for some time and then slowly increase your workload. But it feels good now so I’m ready."
It's been 12 days since the club has held a full practice and Liljegren will go in without that type of preparation. Depending on Brodie's situation, he may move right up to the top assignment alongside Morgan Rielly or perhaps move further down.
Despite the lack of prep, the Leafs expect Liljegren to give the team a much-needed boost.
"He looks like a guy that is refreshed and excited and anxious to play. To that end he should help us," Keefe said of Liljegren. "Especially with his feet and the way he can skate. That’s been a challenge for us getting out of our zone.
"Depending on Brodie’s status, it’s going to impact the matchups and things that he may face. He’s a good player for us. He was playing well when we lost him."
Liljegren has one assist in 10 games with the Leafs this season.
