
The Maple Leafs will try to shake off a rollercoaster of a game against the Islanders when they visit Madison Square Garden.
NEW YORK — The Toronto Maple Leafs will visit the New York Rangers to complete a mini two-game road trip in the city on Tuesday.
Toronto is coming off an emotional 4-3 overtime loss to the New York Islanders on Monday at UBS Arena. With 6.4 seconds remaining the Maple Leafs forced overtime when Morgan Rielly scored his fourth goal of the season. William Nylander's shot from the point hit John Tavares, who collected the primary assist to pick up his 1,000th NHL point.
The ninth game in Toronto's last ten was decided by just one goal and the Leafs played in their NHL-leading 12th overtime on Monday.
Martin Jones will make his first start with the Maple Leafs. He made his season debut on Thursday when he stepped onto the ice in relief of Joseph Woll, who was injured in Toronto's 4-3 victory against the Ottawa Senators.
The Leafs signed Jones to a one-year, $875,000 to become the team's third goaltending option.
The Rangers are one of the most consistent teams this season. With a 19-6-1 record, they hold a commanding lead over the top spot in the Metropolitan Division. The Rangers have only lost in consecutive games once this season and have a six-point lead in the division.
Artemi Panarin has been hot for New York this season. He leads the club with 38 points (16 goals and 22 assists) in 26 games.
One of the things that has made the Rangers so successful is their ability to finish off opponents in close games. They are 7-0-0 when tied after two periods.
The Maple Leafs will have their dads in attendance for this game. The dads joined the club on Saturday and took in their 4-0 win against the Nashville Predators at Scotiabank Arena before hopping on a plane to New York.
Bobby McMann is expected to draw into the lineup for the first time since Nov. 30. Ryan Reaves will likely come out in his place. However, Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe cautioned that there are some new people in the room who have fallen ill and they will have to wait and see
Igor Shesterkin is the projected starter in goal for the Rangers. He has a 10-6-0 record with a .908 save percentage this season. Defenseman K'Andre Miller will not dress for New York due to personal reasons.
