'He's Not Close Yet': Maple Leafs' Mark Giordano Out Week-to-Week With a Broken Finger Injury, Timothy Liljegren (Ankle) Begins Skating
Mark Giordano has a broken finger and will be out "week-to-week" after he was injured in the Toronto Maple Leafs' 2-1 shootout victory against the Florida Panthers on Tuesday.
The Maple Leafs defenseman injured himself in the first period when he blocked a shot from Florida Panthers defenseman Aaron Ekblad in the first period.
The 40-year-old Giordano will miss Thursday's game against the Kraken and will be out this weekend against the Boston Bruins on Saturday. Following that, the Maple Leafs don't have a game until Dec. 7. It's not clear if Giordano would be healthy enough to return by that time.
Giordano has a goal and four assists in 20 games this season while averaging 17:52 of tice time.
It's certainly a blow to a Toronto defense corps that is already without John Klingberg (hip) and Timothy Liljegren (ankle).
Liljegren's been out since Nov. 2 but resumed skating on Wednesday for the time since his injury.
"He felt good but he's not close at this point," Keefe said following the team's morning skate on Thursday ahead of their game against the Seattle Kraken.
Liljegren was injured when he was tripped along the corner board by Bruins forward Brad Marchand.
The Maple Leafs will rely on William Lagesson to handle the workload on the second pair in Giordano's absence. Simon Benoit will skate with Conor Timmins, who just returned to the lineup on Friday against the Chicago Blackhawks after missing most of the regular season with a lower-body injury.
Maxime Lajoie was called up by the Maple Leafs to serve as an extra body at practice.
