Hakanpaa and Dewar, who were on conditioning loans with the Marlies, returned to practicing with the Maple Leafs.

Toronto Maple Leafs superstar center Auston Matthews took the ice for the club's optional morning skate on Saturday. But when will he return to game action?

Jani Hakanpaa was back at practice with the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday, but Max Pacioretty was not.

Hakanpaa has played two games with the Toronto Marlies — one last weekend against the Cleveland Monsters and one this past weekend against the Charlotte Checkers — as he works his way back from arthroscopic knee surgery last season.

He played both games alongside Marshall Rifai on the Marlies' top defense unit.

The defenseman was an extra on the back end during the line rushes at Monday's practice as Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube elects to keep his three pairings together.

Hakanpaa was placed on long-term injured reserve before the season began and was required to miss the first 10 games and 24 days of the season, which he now has. He's eligible to return at any point.

With the news from the Maple Leafs that Pacioretty is out week-to-week with a lower-body injury, a debut for Hakanpaa could come soon. Pacioretty left Saturday's game against the Montreal Canadiens after the first period and didn't return.

William Nylander and Max Domi were absent from Toronto's practice on Monday as the two players took maintenance days. Auston Matthews, who's missed three games with an upper-body injury, wasn't at Maple Leafs practice.

He was on the ice for Toronto's optional morning skate ahead of their matchup against the Canadiens. Matthews can return to game action on Tuesday against the Ottawa Senators after being placed on IR retroactive to Nov. 3.
