Just two days before Nick Robertson and the Toronto Maple Leafs are scheduled to meet with an arbitrator, both sides have submitted their requests and comparable figures. According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, Robertson is seeking an AAV of $2.25 million, while the Leafs are asking for $1.2 million.
Robertson's is the only remaining arbitration case in the NHL after the other 10 player-filed cases were settled with their respective teams. The Leafs and Robertson have until the start of the hearing on Sunday to agree to a deal, otherwise, an arbitrator will have the final say on the 23-year-old’s next contract. Once the case is settled, a second buyout window will open for the Leafs, although it’s unlikely they would pursue that option with any of the players on their roster.
Maple Leafs Risk Major Mistake If Nick Robertson Isn’t Signed Or Traded Before Arbitration
It should come as no surprise that Nick Robertson’s pending player-elected arbitration case is the last of all cases this offseason to reach a conclusion. After all, Robertson’s tenure with the Toronto Maple Leafs has undeniably been complicated. Drafted by the Maple Leafs in the second round (53rd overall) in the 2019 NHL Draft, his six years in Toronto have been filled with more downs than ups.
Robertson established career highs last season with 15 goals and 69 games played, but he only appeared in three of Toronto’s 13 playoff games last season. Over five seasons with the Maple Leafs, Robertson has recorded 32 goals and 24 assists in 156 games. The player just finished up a one-year deal worth $875,000 that was signed in September.
According to Puckpedia.com, the Leafs currently have $2,932,222 in salary cap space, which is based on a 23-player roster that does not include Robertson.
