Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported on Saturday Headlines that the deal could get done as soon as Monday.
The Maple Leafs are reportedly closing in on a deal with William Nylander
During the second intermission of Toronto's game against the San Jose Sharks on Saturday, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported that the Maple Leafs and Nylander's camp are very close to a contract, which could come in the next few days.
"It's getting close. The principles aren't talking. The Maple Leafs fly home from San Jose on Sunday, and we could see this (a deal) as soon as Monday, and I do believe the AAV for Nylander is going to be around $11.5 million a year," Friedman reported.
"Now, obviously there's going to be a ton of debate about this. I think quite simply, it came down to one fact: The Toronto Maple Leafs wanted to keep the player. They think he's a good player and a big part of their future, and this was the price it took to get him for eight years.
"We could see it as soon as Monday. Around $11.5 million a year."
Multiple reports this week have stated that Toronto and Nylander's camp want to get a deal worked out before the NHL's All-Star Weekend in early February.
The 27-year-old is in the midst of the most successful season of his career, scoring 21 goals and 33 assists for 54 points in 37 games this year. Nylander is also in the top 10 in NHL scoring.
He leads the Maple Leafs in scoring and is on pace for 116 points if he plays all 82 games this season.
Nylander set a Maple Leafs franchise record for the longest point streak to start a season at 17 games. The 27-year-old is in the final year of a six-year, $45 million deal he signed in Dec. 2018.
The annual average value that Friedman has reported would make Nylander the second-highest-paid player on the Maple Leafs, behind only Auston Matthews, who makes $13.25 million per year after this season.
