Is the injury concern regarding Joseph Woll much ado about nothing?

When the Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender stepped onto the ice at Ford Performance Centre on Tuesday before his team was scheduled to practice, he didn't field any shots. He worked on some side-to-side movements for a few minutes before departing.

TSN's Chris Johnston updated the latest on Woll's status on the latest edition of Insider Trading

"The feeling is that Joseph Woll is actually progressing quite well here in his return. And I think the Leafs look at the schedule right now. Just two weeks, two games on the schedule this week and they just want to be smart," Johnston explained. "They're making sure he gets back to 100 percent, not wanting to rush him back here. And so I think you'll see him up the workload on the ice in the coming days. Also in the coming days, he will go through some testing. The Leafs will have a better idea of exactly when he's due to return. But this feeling right now is this is not long-term. Nothing to freak out about. The Leafs have some time and they're using it."

Woll was the presumptive starting goaltender for the Maple Leafs this season. But on the morning of what many expected would be his first start of the season against the Montreal Canadiens, the club announced that the goaltender sustained "lower-body tightness' and later put him on injured reserve, ruling him ineligible for the club's first three regular season games.

Woll remains on injured reserve as Anthony Stolarz and Dennis Hildeby have held down the fort rather well, allowing a combined five goals over the club's first three contests.

Following practice on Tuesday, Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube said there was a "good chance" Woll would join his teammates for the club's optional skate on Wednesday against the Los Angeles Kings. After that, they don't play again until Saturday when they host the New York Rangers.

The oft-injured Woll ended last season not able to dress in a crucial Game 7 against the Boston Bruins in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, a game Toronto would go on to lose 2-1. The club recently signed Woll to a three-year extension worth $11 million which kicks in at the beginning of the 2025-26 season.
