Savard and the Calgary Flames agreed to part ways on Wednesday after spending one season with the organization as an assistant coach.

Marc Savard could be heading to the Toronto Maple Leafs as an assistant to new head coach Craig Berube.

According to TSN and SDPN's Chris Johnston, there's a good chance that Savard will return to his home province of Ontario to join the Maple Leafs coaching staff.

"Savard certainly seems like a strong possibility. I know Craig Berube liked working with him when they were together in St. Louis. He's someone who lives in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area). Obviously, the opportunity for him, potentially to come to the Leafs' staff is pretty appealing. And so all around, I could see the fit there," Johnston reported Thursday on The Chris Johnston Show.

The 46-year-old worked under Berube with the St. Louis Blues during the 2019-20 season before becoming the OHL's Windsor Spitfires' head coach for two years.

Savard returned to the NHL as an assistant coach of the Calgary Flames this past season. The two sides mutually agreed to part ways on Wednesday, five days after Berube was named head coach of the Maple Leafs.

St. Louis had the third-best power play in the NHL (24.3%) during the season Savard was running the power play with the Blues. If Savard joins Toronto's staff and is in charge of the power play, new philosophies must be developed.

Johnston also reported that if that is the case, it doesn't mean Guy Boucher, who headed the Maple Leafs' power play last season, is on his way out of the organization.

"I mean, sometimes you see what each coach, within the assistant coaches, what they're assigned to cover just shifts, and Guy Boucher's known, throughout his time when he was a head coach, as an excellent defensive coach. And so perhaps, there's still a way that he ends up on the staff, but someone knew is there," Johnston said.

"But it certainly seems like there's a lot of smoke around Savard and it does seem as though he's likely to come."
