Report: Max Domi Avoids NHL Free Agency to Sign Four-Year, $15 Million Contract Extension With Maple Leafs

The contract carries a $3.75 million salary cap hit.

After another disappointing Toronto Maple Leafs playoff loss, it's time to break up the core four forwards and that might mean moving on from Mitch Marner, who becomes a free agent at the end of the 2024-25 season.

Max Domi is staying in Toronto.

According to TSN's Chris Johnston, Domi an the Maple Leafs have agreed to a four-year contract that will carry a salary cap hit of $3.75 million per season.

In May, Domi expressed a desire to return to the Maple Leafs after one season in Toronto. He found a fit on the team's top line down the stretch alongside Max Domi, but was also used as a centre.

During his media availability with reporters in Las Vegas on Saturday, Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving said he would continue to talk to the agents of Domi and Tyler Bertuzzi, who remains unsigned heading into July 1.

Treliving hammered the point this week of the team's priority to sign defensemen and that cap constraints could make things difficult in re-signing pending in free agents. But it's clear Treliving and Domi found a number and term that worked and it made for the club to commit, despite not having Tanev, whose rights were acquired by the Leafs on Saturday, and others signed.

According to PuckPedia.com, Domi's contract would give the Maple Leafs roughly $15.1 million to work with following the signing. $9 million of the $15 million commitment will be paid out in signing bonuses. The deal also includes a 13-team no-trade list.

The 29-year-old Domi had nine goals and 38 assists in 80 games with Toronto last season.

    More to come...
