Lambert most recently served as head coach of the New York Islanders until he was replaced by NHL Hall-of-Fame goaltender Patrick Roy.
We're getting a little bit closer to figuring out what the Toronto Maple Leafs bench will look like next season.
According to TSN's Darren Dreger, Lane Lambert could be joining newly installed head coach Craig Berube in Toronto.
"I would assume that he would manage the forwards under the guidance of Berube," Dreger said on TSN's First Up with Aaron Korolnek and Carlo Colaiacovo on Monday.
Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman also mentioned Lambert to Toronto as chatter he was hearing.
Lambert spent the last six seasons in the New York Islanders organization where he started out as an associate coach before being promoted to the head coaching position in May of 2022 after the club dismissed Barry Trotz. In January. Lambert was Trotz's right-hand man during their tenure together which stemmed back to their days with the Washington Capitals where the two won a Stanley Cup together in 2018.
In January, the Islanders fired Lambert and replaced him with four-time Stanley Cup champion and Hall-of-Fame goaltender Patrick Roy.
Dreger points out that it looks like assistant coach Mike Van Ryn is staying in Toronto. Berube and Van Ryn worked together with the St. Louis Blues. But Dreger points out that there is still a "question mark" when it comes to reports of Marc Savard's status.
I think that it can also speak to the time of year and how both Berube and general manager Brad Treliving want to be on the same page and they are on the same page here," Dreger said.
Savard and the Calgary Flames announced a mutual parting of the ways after one season where the former player ran the power play. There were reports that Savard was possibly contemplating a return to junior in a head coaching capacity.
Rounding out the coaching staff isn't necessarily Toronto's top priority as the club gets ready for the draft and then free agency on July 1. But it sounds like the bench is getting a bit more clarity.
