On Saturday night at Scotiabank Arena, warm-ups turned into an unexpected spectacle when Steven Lorentz’s helmet became hilariously stuck between two panes of glass before the Toronto Maple Leafs’ matchup with the visiting Washington Capitals.
As captured on the arena's jumbotron, the bizarre incident saw defenseman Simon Benoit tried valiantly to free the helmet using his hands, but it was no match for the tight grip of the glass panes.
Instead, it was forward Max Domi who came to the rescue with a pair of scissors.
The helmet did eventually come loose, but as reported by David Alter of The Hockey News, the arena crew eventually had to remove the panes of glass entirely because part of Lorentz’s helmet strap was still wedged in place.
Footage of the incident on X was posted showcasing the surreal yet comical scene.
It’s something completely out of the ordinary and you must applaud the players’ reactions to the occurrence. With a new strap and helmet, Lorentz was able to refocus in warm-ups, laughing off the unusual mishap.
Lorentz has three goals, three assists, and six points through 36 games with the Maple Leafs this season. The 28-year-old recorded an assist on Friday against the Detroit Red Wings and will look to put his humorous helmet incident behind him and add to his point total.
