The Toronto Maple Leafs have always shown their support for other franchises in the marketplace and Monday was no different.

Hours before Toronto played in their first ever Professional Women's Hockey League game against New York, the Maple Leafs' social accounts posted "TODAY'S THE DAY" along with a message of good luck to the Toronto franchise. In the post, Maple Leafs captain John Tavares and alternate captains Morgan Rielly, Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner were wearing matching Toronto PWHL hoodies.

It's not the first time the Maple Leafs have posted about the women's team from the same neighbourhood. The club had a close association with the Toronto Furies of the now-defunct Canadian Women's Hockey League. Both teams formed a strategic partnership in 2015 with the Furies rebranding to include a similar color scheme and Maple Leaf.

When the CWHL ceased operations in 2019, Support for women's hockey shifted to the Toronto Six of the Premier Hockey Federation. The Six were the last winners of the Isobel Cup, handed out annually to the PHF champion. The club never defended the title as the team and league were folded into the new Professional Women's Hockey League.

The Toronto club (which doesn't have a name yet as the decision on name and logo will come at a later date for all PWHL teams) fell 4-0 to New York in the league's inaugural game. The contest took place at the old Maple Leaf Gardens, which has since been renovated into a multi-purpose facility with hockey played at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
